Classy Campbell Stops Coyle In Hull

August 4 2015

Luke Campbell MBE stopped Tommy Coyle to settle the ‘Rumble on the Humber’ in style and move into World title contention in Hull.

The Olympic gold medal hero sent his local rival to the canvas in the second round of their WBC World Lightweight title eliminator with a sharp left hook to the body, and while Coyle gamely got to his feet, Campbell had already asserted an authority on ‘Boom Boom’ that he would not surrender in the contest.

Coyle took Campbell beyond eight rounds for the first time in the paid ranks for ‘Cool Hand’ but two rounds later, Campbell finished the fight in emphatic fashion, flooring Coyle three times before the referee waved the contest off after the fourth knockdown of the round.

“It was a fantastic fight, he’s such a tough man, every time I hurt him he kept coming back for more,” said Campbell. “Tommy is a great fighter, I knew I couldn’t rush in, I had to be patient and pick my shots, he knows what to do in the ring.

“I knew I was in for a tough fight and that’s what I got. I had some fantastic rounds in there and I had to be in the best shape of my career to beat him.

“That was vital for me, it showed that I can do the rounds at a good pace and go deep in fights.”

“Luke is a special talent,” said Coyle. “I came in confident that I could cause an upset but he was too good. I just love what I do, but Luke deserves all the praise tonight as it was a great performance.”
