Old School: The White Rhino returns to his former stomping ground

February 3 2026

In the build-up to his next bout, Dave Allen revisited his former secondary school to offer an honest look at how early structure and discipline shape an athlete’s journey.

Almost two decades on from leaving the classroom behind, Dave Allen returned to The Hayfield School in Doncaster for a special visit centred on education, ambition and sporting achievement.

Welcomed back by staff – including his former PE teacher, the legendary Mr Taylor – Allen took time to walk the corridors where his journey first began, reconnecting with familiar faces and reflecting on how much the school – and his own path – has evolved since he left.

Reflecting on the return and the sense of nostalgia that came with it, Allen admitted the visit brought back memories from every corner of the school.

“What an experience it was going back to school, 18 years since I left,” explained Allen.

“Lots of memories came flooding back as we were walking about,” he continued.

“It’s changed a lot, but it was great to see some of my old teachers like Mr Taylor – and a few others.”

Following the welcome, Allen spent time with a group of specially selected Year 9 students for an open and honest Q&A session.

Drawing on his own experiences growing up in Doncaster, the discussion covered topics such as school life, sport, discipline, setbacks and the importance of keeping options open alongside boxing ambitions.

Looking back on his own time in education, Allen spoke candidly about hindsight, resilience and how school helped shape his mindset beyond the ring.

“Hindsight is a wonderful thing, I do look back and wish I achieved more but I used my grades as a driving force to push on with my boxing career,” reflected Allen.

“All students should knuckle down with their studies, remain disciplined academically and also continue to train and work hard across various sports.”

The conversation also explored Allen’s time representing the school in football and running, the teachers he built strong bonds with and the personal lessons he learned growing up in Doncaster – including sharing his school years with close friend and classmate, One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson – with resilience emerging as a recurring theme throughout.

After the Q&A, Allen joined Matchroom’s Head of Community Development, Alex Le Guével, in the sports hall to deliver an after-school boxing session – giving students the opportunity to get hands-on with the sport using equipment provided by our partners at Everlast.

The session introduced students to core boxing fundamentals, including stance, balance, shadowboxing, padwork and conditioning, blending technical learning with high energy and enjoyment.

Impressed by the enthusiasm and ability on display, Allen was quick to praise the students’ efforts.

A few of them can whack!

“There’s some talented young boxers coming through at the school,” observed Allen.

“They were all pretty sharp on the pads and a few of them can whack!”

Once the students had departed, Mr Taylor guided Allen on a final tour of the school, allowing him to take a trip down memory lane while also seeing first-hand how much Hayfield has changed since his school days.

The visit took place in the build-up to Allen’s next bout on the undercard of Wood vs. Warrington 2 at Motorpoint Arena in Nottingham, with big-fight momentum providing the backdrop to the day.

With fight night approaching, Allen admitted that spending time with the students sharpened his focus as the countdown continues.

“It’s not long to go now until my fight and talking to the youngsters made me think about it more, the countdown is on,” explained Allen.

“I’m feeling great just a few weeks out, I’ve been itching to get back in there since the Makhmudov fight and will be looking to get back to winning ways and set up a bigger fight over the summer.”

From classrooms to corridors and into the boxing ring, Allen’s return to The Hayfield School served as a powerful reminder of how early lessons in discipline, resilience and self-belief can shape futures long before fight night.
