Romford roots: Fisher delivers inspiration to New City College students

April 1 2025

From school halls to the heavyweight spotlight, Johnny Fisher brings energy, ambition and real-talk to local college students.

As anticipation builds for his Copper Box rematch with Dave Allen, undefeated heavyweight fan favourite Johnny Fisher took time out of training camp to visit New City College – Redbridge, reconnecting with his roots and delivering a powerful message of inspiration to the next generation.

The Romford Bull was welcomed by a packed theatre of students, many of whom had grown up in similar surroundings to himself. His visit was a homecoming of sorts, filled with energy, authenticity and a genuine passion for giving back to the community that helped shape his journey.

Fisher captivated the audience during an interactive Q&A session, where he spoke candidly about his transition from a young amateur to a rising star in the professional boxing ranks under the Matchroom banner. Drawing on personal experiences, he highlighted the vital role that discipline, resilience and relentless hard work have played in his development both inside and outside the ring.

Joining Johnny on stage was Alex Le Guével, Head of Community Development at Matchroom Boxing, who shared details of his own career path within the sports industry. Alex echoed Johnny’s messages, emphasising that values such as hard work, persistence, self-belief and overcoming setbacks are just as crucial outside the ropes as they are in the ring.

His story provided students with a broader perspective on the wide range of opportunities available within the world of sport – in and out of competition.

If I can do it, so can you.

“It’s about showing up, staying consistent and believing in yourself – even when it’s tough. I was once sitting where you are now. If I can do it, so can you,” Fisher told the students.

“It all starts here, where you’re from. I’m not here trying to preach to you and tell you how you should live your life, I’m just talking from my experience,” he continued.

“If you do what everyone else does, you’ll get the same results that everyone else has. If you do those hard things, the little 1%’s, they make a difference.”

Following the Q&A, Johnny observed a live training session led by his former amateur coach, Jamie Williams. The session served as a reminder of the key role grassroots coaching and mentorship play in shaping futures – both in sport and in life.

Johnny’s pride in seeing the next generation of boxers coming through under Williams’ guidance was evident, underscoring his appreciation for the support networks that continue to fuel the sport at local level.

The visit was more than a motivational talk, it was a real-time example of what staying grounded and giving back looks like. Johnny’s humility, relatability and commitment to lifting others up make him not just a heavyweight contender, but a heavyweight ambassador for boxing in the community.

As he prepares to step through the ropes once again, Johnny’s actions away from the ring continue to speak volumes – proving that true champions don’t just fight for titles, but for the people and places that made them who they are.
