Sweet science: Sugar Núñez motivates Sinaloa kids to follow in his footsteps

September 3 2025
Los Mochis’ own World Champion gave youngsters a taste of the big stage, turning a local gym visit into an unforgettable prelude to Saturday night’s title defence.
With just days to go until his first defence of the IBF Super Featherweight World Title, Eduardo ‘Sugar’ Núñez returned to his roots at Kochul Gym in Los Mochis, Sinaloa for a special community visit.
The champion took to the gym floor to meet dozens of young aspiring boxers, sharing time with the very place where his own journey began.
From signing gloves and memorabilia to snapping photos and chatting with families, Núñez made sure every child left with a smile and a story to tell.

Excitement reached new heights as Núñez came face-to-face with challenger Christopher ‘Pitufo’ Díaz inside the gym, with the next generation of Los Mochis fighters forming a lively crowd around the pair. The electric atmosphere gave the youngsters a ringside taste of fight week energy usually reserved for the big arenas.
Every child in attendance was also gifted tickets to Saturday night’s event, ensuring they get to witness world-class boxing up close – and cheer on one of their own under the bright lights.

“This city means everything to me,” said Núñez.
“To come back here as World Champion and spend time with the kids who are working so hard in this gym is very special. I hope they can see that if I can do it, they can too – and maybe one day one of them will be standing where I am now.”

For Kochul Gym, the visit was another reminder of its vital role at the heart of the community.
By opening its doors and creating these moments, the club continues to inspire young people across the city to dream big and follow in the footsteps of their heroes.

“This was our first official community event in Mexico and it couldn’t have been in a better place,” said Alex Le Guével, Head of Community Development at Matchroom Boxing.
“The energy in the gym today was incredible and it’s only the start – we’ve got bigger and better plans to build on this and make sure even more young people benefit from the sport in the future.”

The buzz from Kochul Gym now rolls straight into fight night, where Los Mochis will unite behind their champion as Núñez looks to defend his crown in front of a hometown crowd.
Eduardo ‘Sugar’ Núñez defends his IBF Super Featherweight World Title against Christopher ‘Pitufo’ Díaz on Saturday 7th September at the Centro de Usos Múltiples, Los Mochis, Sinaloa, shown live worldwide on DAZN.
