Running the show: Conway and Stephenson lace up for Matchroom Run Club in Northampton

November 16 2024

Matchroom Run Club, Northampton - Kieron Conway and Michael Stephenson

The picturesque autumnal setting of Abington Park in Northampton was the destination on Saturday morning for the latest in the Matchroom Run Club series, with Kieron Conway and Michael Stephenson inviting the assembled runners, of which around 150 were in attendance – from the town’s boxing, running and fitness communities – to enjoy a social 5K run.

The event was delivered in partnership with the Milton Keynes-based community fitness group, Nobody Left Behind (NLB), known for advocating inclusive fitness and creating a fun filled occasion. The group’s moniker turned out to be fitting for a day that brought together runners from diverse backgrounds and abilities. The supportive atmosphere ensured that everyone felt encouraged and motivated, embodying the spirit of both boxing and running as disciplines that demand resilience and unity.

Each participant received a special maroon Matchroom t-shirt, chosen to represent the colours of Northampton Town FC and foster a sense of local pride. To keep everyone hydrated throughout the event, our partners at Drip generously provided water for all attendees, ensuring runners stayed refreshed and energised as they took on the route.

Following an introductory briefing from Matchroom’s Head of Community Development, Alex Le Guével, the runners set off to complete two loops of the parkland route, with beginners and walkers opting for one 2.5K loop and more advanced runners tackling the full course distance.

Saturday’s event marked the countdown to Conway and Stephenson’s respective title fights in Birmingham on Saturday November 30th. Both fighters are set to compete on the undercard of Sunny Edwards v Galal Yafai at the BP Pulse Arena, with Conway vying with Ryan Kelly for the Commonwealth Middleweight title and Stephenson aiming to claim the English Light Heavyweight title against Troy Jones.

It's about the journey and the people who support you along the way.

- Kieron Conway

Speaking to the Matchroom cameras, Kieron Conway couldn’t hide his delight at the huge turnout from his hometown fans.

“Boxing isn’t just about winning titles. It’s about the journey and the people who support you along the way,” beamed Conway.

“Running with nearly 150 fans and fellow athletes at Abington Park was incredible – and it gave me that extra motivation heading into fight night. For a town like Northampton, that hasn’t had big time boxing here for many years, days like this are so important,” he continued.

“The event has generated so much hype, buzz and awareness ahead of the fight itself. Huge thanks to everyone who came out and made it such a memorable day. The feedback we’ve had from everyone that attended has been phenomenal.”

Looking ahead to Birmingham, Conway placed great importance on returning to Northampton with the Commonwealth title, before embarking on a huge 2025.

“It’s a very good title to win. Obviously I had eyes on the British title, that’s what thought I was fighting for, but regardless – it doesn’t matter – the goal is still the same, to win in very good style,” said Conway.

“Again, it’s another belt to add to my collection. That’s what I’m here for. To add titles, rack up wins and capture the fans’ attention,” he continued.

“I’m heading into 2025 feeling more focused, motivated and excited than ever. I’ve worked hard to get to this position – and with big fights on the horizon, I’m ready to make it a standout year in my career.”

“The journey’s just getting started and I can’t wait to show everyone what I’m capable of on November 30th.”

Events like this are about bringing people together.

- Michael Stephenson

Michael Stephenson, fighting on the big stage for the first time in his career, was full of pride when explaining the importance of community.

“Seeing the community come together like this reminds me of why I’m in this sport,” said Stephenson.

“Events like this are about bringing people together and showing that we’re stronger when we support each other. In boxing, you’re often seen as being in the ring alone, but it’s the team around you and the people who believe in you that make the difference,” he continued.

“The support today was overwhelming, and it’s been a real highlight in my training leading up to the fight. A big shoutout to NLB and all who joined us at Abington Park. And the new!”

The event celebrated Northampton’s rich sporting heritage, while highlighting the vital role of local support in nurturing the next generation of athletes. With Kieron Conway and Michael Stephenson preparing to step into the ring in just two weeks, Matchroom Run Club proved to be a fantastic way to generate excitement and unite the community ahead of what promises to be a historic night of boxing in Birmingham.
